one year in

I'm within a week of being one year from my first activation.  I'm also very close to being six months from my second one.  The second CI complicated things.  Having two makes your brain start over with rehab, and it's kind of frustrated doing the same thing twice in the same year.  

But you know, it works.  So yesterday I had the last of my scheduled audiology appointments - from now on I have to request an appointment when I want one.  I'll probably go in later this summer, and soon I'll be just checking in annually.

But yesterday we did some testing, and I learned what I already knew:  that despite the frustration and the imperfect sound, things are going really well.  So to recap my last hearing test and add yesterday's results, I give you this:

 
Prior to implantation, with two hearing aids:          19% comprehension

Three months after right side implanted:               89% with CI only
                                                                          92% with CI and HA

Three months after left side implanted:                 87% with right CI only
                                                                          84% with left CI only
                                                                          93% with both Cis

Six months with bilateral Cis:                              94% with right CI only
                                                                        90% with left CI only
                                                                        97% with both

We also did some testing with background noise.  Three months ago I got something like 45% with background noise, and today that was at 64%.

I keep on saying it, but it continues to be true:  this just keeps getting better.  And it's astonishing.

So this morning I had my call from the surgery center nurse.  It was fine - she speaks clearly and loud enough and once I asked her to slow down a bit we did just fine.  We are good to go. Tonight I have to take a shower and then wash my entire self from the neck down with an antiseptic skin cleanser, TWICE.  Then I do that again in the morning.  Apparently we are Not Having Skin Germs in my incision. And then we go up to the U. Next post I'm going to have a big bandage over my right ear! 😃😊

where do we go from here?

I'm about to embark on something that I think will be life-changing.  I've spent my life traveling, and I see life as a journey, so this is just a juke to the left:   the road curves up there, and I am going in another direction. I've been hard of hearing since birth, a sensorineural hearing loss that runs through our family - my mom had it, so does my brother, an aunt, some cousins.  We all say "what?" a lot.  It's also progressive (or regressive, I guess, really) and has been getting worse throughout my life.  Fifteen years ago I began to really struggle to hear on the phone; ten years or so ago I stopped using the phone handset at all and in the last five years or so I stopped even being able to understand voice mail messages.  Without context, word comprehension is really difficult for me. a cyborg is born

Had my surgery this morning:  it went well with no unexpected issues or problems.  I'm at home now with a thing like a hubcap over my right ear and the surgical site.  The staff at the surgery center was great:  when I arrived and got checked in (and had to say at least four times that I was there for cochlear implant surgery on my RIGHT ear) I was given a gown, and it was MY gown!  I was on the product development team for a surgical patient gown that maintains normothermia.  For the first eight years or so I managed the contract manufacture of the product as well.  It's currently not manufactured through my site anymore, but it's still my gown and I loved having one.
